The Best Things to do on Koh Mook, Thailand

Visit the Emerald Cave Beach

A trip to the Emerald Cave is one of the best things to do on Koh Mook. These caves are still relatively off the beaten path, and are home to an incredible hidden beach! They can be reached at low tide by boat or kayak, but we would recommend booking a boat trip. The sea was pretty choppy when we went, so a kayak was out of the question!

We booked our trip with our accommodation Phusam Big Resort. For 150 baht pp, we got transfers from our bungalow to the boat, a return boat trip, and an experienced local guide who swam with us through the caves.

Jumping off the boat into the middle of the sea to get to the caves.

Without our guide it would have been rather difficult to find the hidden cove located in the maze of caves! He led the way with a headlamp as the rest of us flailed along behind him in the pitch black. The only light we could see came from the eerie glow of the emerald waters around us. The entire swim took about five minutes and was an incredibly cool experience in itself!

Nothing could prepare us however, for the magical unspoilt beach which awaited us at the other end!

Our first impressions of the hidden beach!

It felt like something out of a film, and we now know how Leonardo Dicaprio must have left when he discovered The Beach! Pristine white sands, shimmering waters and not a soul in sight! It was paradise.

The entire beach is fringed by dense jungle.

I think this view alone bags the number one spot for best things to do on Koh Mook.  Make sure you arrive between 7:00 – 8am to get the most privacy! The later you go, the more people you’ll have to share this slice of paradise with!

Another one of the best things to do on Koh Mook is to revel in its gorgeous beaches! Our favourite was Charlie Beach. It was so spacious and clean, and boasted unreal views of the cliffs and the Andaman Sea.

Plenty of free space for relaxing on Charlie Beach.

We couldn't believe our eyes when we saw how empty this beach was! Yep that's right, it's still possible to find empty beaches in Thailand (you just need to know where to look!)

Cloudy days on Koh Mook

Even on an overcast day, Charlie beach was still so beautiful. The greenery of the surroundings made us think of Sri Lanka!

However, when the sun finally peeked out from behind the clouds, we were rewarded with this view!

The water was so warm and clear! Perfect for a paddle.

This beach also provided the perfect setting for another one of the best things to do on Koh Mook: sunset watching!

The sunsets here are absolutely breath-taking.

This wasn't even the best part of the sunset!

Explore the island and get to know the local people.

Finally, what makes Koh Mook so special is the local people. For us, one of the best things to do on Koh Mook is simply to wander around and chat to the locals. Their warmth and kindness has been second to none. This is partially due to the fact their home hasn’t been spoilt by an influx of tourists, so westerners are still looked upon favourably!

It is so important to remember when you visit somewhere as a traveller, that for you it might be a vacation but for the local people this is their home, and therefore should be treated as such! This could be something as simple as remembering to take off your shoes when you enter the local shop/restaurant or showing an interest in learning a few words of Thai! It’s the little things that make all the difference!
