1) Get up early to explore the Old Town of Dubrovnik without the crowds clogging up the narrow alleyways.
The sheer number of tourists in Dubrovnik can be a little overwhelming, especially if you visit between lunchtime and sunset. Our advice is to get to the old town before nine am. That way you can wander around the beautiful cobbled streets at your own leisure, and get that much sought-after Game of Thrones shot without any lurking photobombers…
Another bonus is that the early morning light really brings out the warm tones of the buildings creating the perfect photo lighting!
2) Another way to enjoy Dubrovnik without the crowds is to visit the beaches away from the castle area.
Whilst the castle makes for a pretty stunning backdrop, unfortunately the surrounding rocks are jampacked with other sunseekers and therefore it can be difficult to find a decent spot to spend the day by the water. We walked out of the old town and down the main road Ul. Branitelja Dubrovnika in search of a more secluded beach.
There are many little paths leading down to the water along this road. We walked down just one of many and stumbled across a perfect little cove called Kupaliste Boninovo.
The water was so clear even with sunsetting and there were still a few locals snorkelling and jumping off the rocks. It felt like a hidden gem despite being only a short walk away from the main tourist centre! This was the perfect spot to watch the sun go down in Dubrovnik without the crowds spoiling the romantic atmosphere.
3) Hike into the hills and look over the stunning Dubrovnik coastline.
Instead of queuing for the cable car to glimpse that panoramic view of Dubrovnik, why not take a short hike which enables you to enjoy the city from several different viewpoints. The higher you climb the more breath-taking the views get! To get to the viewpoints, leave through the east side of the castle and walk up towards Ploce and the main road Jadranska Cesta.
The route is very scenic so you’ll find yourselves stopping every minute or so like we did to take that perfect shot!
This is where we stopped, but you can keep going even higher! The best part was having this view all to ourselves without jostling for room. Our only regret was not having come up here for sunset!
4) In order to fully experience Dubrovnik without the crowds, don’t forget to explore its beautiful suburbs!
We were lucky enough to be staying in the suburb of Komolac, a verdant, mountainous area presided by a gorgeous marina. It couldn’t be more different from the hustle and bustle of the old town of Dubrovnik, and provided a welcome respite from the heat and crowds of the city.
To get to Komolac take the bus 1a or 1b (direction Mokosica) from anywhere in the city centre and get off at the Tenturijica stop. The water in this area is extremely refreshing and a perfect way to cool off from a day’s sightseeing in the city.
5) Finally, during your stay in Dubrovnik be sure to check out the islands off its coast!
Many places offer tours that enable you to visit several islands and provide drinks and meals throughout the day! This is a way to experience Dubrovnik without the crowds from a completely different perspective.
Here you can enjoy the snorkelling and picnic opportunities on offer whilst being rewarded with views of Dubrovnik’s old town. Whilst being on a tour means that you won’t have the beaches to yourselves, you’ll still find that its far less crowded than mainland Dubrovnik.
If you’re looking for a more romantic experience, there are many options of chartered boats including speedboats and glass-bottomed boats to choose from. Depending on your budget, you can really tailor the experience to suit your own tastes.
